Technology has touched us beyond our imaginations, making this world a connected place with easy access to almost all that we need. When we state the term “technology”, the first thing which flashes up in our mind is “something related to machines”. Evolution of machines started when we;
- Started bringing maturity and complexity in our thinking
- Started bringing in alternate ways of doing things so as to make the tasks easier to perform and faster to finish
- Started to bring dependency in our behavior. World has not remained out of our reach today, as technology has made it possible to explore even the darkest corner of our home planet.
Technological evolution in the world has delivered both good and bad to the society. We have witnessed scattering elements of nature, as an outcome of destructive nature of technology, while on the positive side we have felt longevity, effectiveness, efficiencies and reach as some of the attributes. Today, we have achieved the state of technological evolution, where saturation has struck us in some sections, while we are still innovating and evolving in others. Technological evolution including telecommunications and internet has helped us achieve “connected independence”, which in turn has delivered us with more success, vitality, freedom and independence. Things which appeared complex, cumbersome and threatening has become much easier through these technological breakthroughs. There’s a lot to be seen in these areas where “pace of delivery and accomplishment”, would serve as a key parameter and measure of success. The world has already started witnessing this with future rollouts and advancements.
Another keyword relating to technological evolution is Convergence, which refers to mutual evolution and advancement of technologies with a ‘similar or kind of similar behavior’. Telecom convergence (refers to bringing of voice and data communications together) resulting in multi-play (triple play, quad play), social connectivity and freedom. Similarly other interesting convergence areas include:
- Convergence of IT, Telecom, Electronics and Entertainment – Such convergence is referred to as Digital Convergence. It allows the freedom of viewing the multimedia content from multiple devices including smartphones, tablets, PCs, laptops etc.
- Convergence of media content, computing and communication – This is referred to as Media Convergence and allows the freedom of information in almost all facets of life.
- Internet of things Convergence – Machine to Machine (M2M) and Internet of things have hit the convergence point, where none of the technology can exist without other.
